Introduction
Hi everyone! I’m Fabricio Cartín Arias, and I’m glad to share my final report for the WPCredits course. This report summarizes my contributions to the WordPress Photos directory, the challenges I faced, and the skills I gained throughout the process. I hope my experience inspires others to contribute to open source projects.
Teams and Projects I Contributed To
I contributed to the WordPress Photos team. My focus was on submitting original photographs to the WordPress Photo Directory, following the community’s quality and licensing standards so they can be freely reused by anyone building a WordPress site.
Learning Resources
I started by exploring the official WordPress Photo Directory and reviewing the Photos team’s contribution guidelines to understand the technical requirements (resolution, focus, composition) and the CC0 licensing terms. I also completed the onboarding courses on open source fundamentals, WordPress project decision-making, community meeting etiquette, and conflict resolution basics. My mentor provided guidance throughout the submission and review process.
Challenges and Solutions
One challenge was understanding the specific quality standards required for a photo to be accepted — some of my early submissions needed adjustments before being approved. I solved this by carefully reviewing the feedback from the moderation team and adjusting my approach to composition and technical quality in later submissions.
Another challenge was staying consistent with the submission and follow-up process while balancing academic coursework. I addressed this by setting a regular schedule to review my submissions and document my progress on this blog.
Key Takeaways from the WPCredits Course
The WPCredits course taught me the value of contributing to a global open source community. I learned to:
- Understand and follow contribution standards set by a large, global project.
- Document a process clearly for others to follow.
- Communicate progress and receive feedback from a community team.
I also connected with the WordPress community through Slack, which was welcoming and supportive throughout the process.
New Skills Acquired
Through this project, I gained:
- Technical skills: understanding of image quality standards, licensing (CC0), and the WordPress Photo Directory submission process.
- Soft skills: attention to detail, patience with an iterative review process, and clear written communication for documentation.
Personal Reflections and Next Steps
Contributing to WordPress has been a rewarding experience. I was surprised by how supportive and welcoming the community is to new contributors. Going forward, I plan to keep submitting photographs to the directory and explore other ways to get involved with the WordPress community. I’d love to hear from others who have contributed — feel free to reach out.
